This tea is made from Japanese green tea being heavily roasted into brown color. It has significantly less caffeine than other teas, for example estimated half of caffeine quantity at most comparing to matcha.
Houjicha powder can be used in the same way as matcha, but the flavour is dry and toasty, with hints of cocoa, lacking the grassy and herbal notes of matcha, and the colour is brown. It's an excellent tea when mixed with milk or a plant-based alternative, whether served cold or hot.
Use 1 teaspoon per approximately 2 dl of liquid. Minimize lumps by first mixing it in a very small amount of liquid and making the mixture smooth, or by sifting the powder through a mesh sieve.
